The Church in England

This is an enormous subject which is well covered by the literature and by other sites on the web. My contribution therefore will cover only a few topics which happen to interest me, many of which have a particular Purley aspect.

The Glastonbury Legend

Roman Christianity

Birinus and the West Saxons

The Salisbury Diocese

England and Rome

The English Settlement

William Laud and the Puritans

Clarendon

Street and Neo-Gothicism

Douai Abbey

One might ask why I have chosen these ten aspects? The answer is that my interest is primarily in church history and trying to discover how and why significant changes occurred in the religious life of England. I approach it as one brought up as an Anglican but leaning very much towards Rome, as one who holds a science degree and who finds fundamentalism in any form wholly abhorrent and finally as one who sadly rues the rapidly disappearing spiritual aspects of English life.
