The Berkshire Electronic Archive

This archive has been established by the Berkshire Heritage Environment Forum and aims to provide a mechanism whereby individuals, local societies and institutions across the county can make available to the public electronic images of photographs and documents as well as transcriptions and translations of original documents so that they can be accessed from a single index, although being located on a wide range of actual websites.

The general principle is simple. Each electronic document identified for the archive needs to have a registered 'owner' and a summary description. These two items, together with a hyperlink which links the index to the electronic document should be sent to a central registrar who will add the information to the index which is published as a pdf (ie a document in portable document format). The general public may then download the index, search it for items of possible interest and then click on the hyperlink to display the item selected.

The electronic document will need to have a standard filename if it is held on a website other than the owners. The standard format is BRK0-xxxx-yyyy-yyyy where xxxx is a four letter code assigned to the owner and yyyy-yyyy is an eight character name assigned by the owner. For a list of owners CLICK HERE
